The Morning News, “amid a great thrum of imaginary literary fanfare,” has announced the 16 contenders for its 7th annual Tournament of Books. The list, which includes some of the most talked about books of 2010, is decidedly lacking in Northwest authors, but we mention it here because the event is sponsored, in part, by Powell’s and because Boise author and NW indie store favorite Anthony Doerr is one of the judges, as he has been in past years. Doerr, who brought the event to our attention, says that the joy of it “ultimately, is in reading the books, checking out the judge’s comments, and cheering for one’s favorites, rather than finding out the winner.” Let the blood sport begin.
