You don’t often get an inside look at the workings of an Award Committee, whether it’s for a national award, or something “less important,” like the Northwest booksellers’ awards. But for the last few years, we have indeed had one member of the Northwest booksellers group who has an established blog, and who has not been afraid to talk about what he thinks of the Committee and its work. Last week he posted a great comment on his reading efforts at this point in the process. The deadline for nominations is the end of October, and many publishers wait until the last minute to submit their nominations. The Committee members have to keep up with the load or they will easily fall so far behind that they will find themselves smothered near the end of the process. Our intrepid Committee member knows that and is trying desperately to read what has come his way. His complaint: Where’s the Romance? I tip my hat to him. Great insight, and great analysis. Such is our assurance that the winners will be deserving.
