Lately I have been reading short books and short stories in an effort to sustain my own daily reading habit in a way that feels compatible with the current demands on my time. In her new book, Every Day I Read: 53 Ways to Get Closer to Books, Hwang Bo-Reum asks the question that plagues all readers (and writers) when burn out hits – What do I hope to get out of this? What keeps me going? The book is full of quotes, tips, and tricks to fit more daily reading into your life, but ultimately seeks to find meaning in reading:
“I hope to become stronger, to stand firm by my convictions, and to become a more mature person. Someone neither arrogant nor naïve. Someone who can be honest about my feelings, yet not let emotions overwhelm me. I want to keep learning and become wiser. I want to see the world, to better understand others.”
This is why, no matter what else is going on in the world or in our personal lives, it is essential that we keep reading.
