This is the kind of Macbeth retelling I’ve been looking for. Ava Reid crafts a Lady Macbeth both bound to the decisions of others as well as conniving in her own right. Every page was filled with female rage and impotence in the face of male dictators while also highlighting Lady Roscille’s brilliant mind. I devoured this book in two days.

“Gut punch Shakespeare” is the best way to describe this book. This is the story that the original should have told–harsh, macabre, and transfixing. I could not put this down and this portrayal of Lady Macbeth is all we have needed, we just did not know it. A must read!

Macbeth has always been a story of brutal, violent power, but in the Ava Reid fashion I’ve come to love, she rips away all pleasantries and forces your attention onto the female violence we tend to overlook. It made me weep and burn in fury for women like Lady Macbeth. May they all rage and revel in bittersweet revenge as they read, because this one is for you.
