Since I have longed for many years to be farmer-grower, and I am also a fan of Wendell Berry’s writing, I really enjoyed Jessica Gigot’s memoir. I was inspired after hearing her read at the store earlier this year and I gained a lot of insights about the reality of small farming. Longing to farm is quite different from spending years of education in horticulture and then doing the very real and hard work of running a farm. Jessica has taken much inspiration from Berry’s writings on agriculture in creating her chosen life in the Skagit Valley as a grower and sheep farmer. Jessica is also a wonderful poet and her writing reflects this. Her book Feeding Hour won a Nautilus Award and was a finalist for the 2021 Washington State Book Award.
