Maggie Mae’s Kids’ Bookshop of Gresham, OR hosted a wildly popular Wonky Donkey reading with live donkeys!
“We knew it would be a fun event but were taken aback by how many people were excited to meet Hattie and Vera.
“Booksellers know how to have fun: Bring in animals! We were lucky in finding our donkeys, as we have a volunteer in the store once a week and they are her daughter’s donkeys. The donkeys love kids, they said, and their owners were excited to be able to bring them in. The only unexpected challenge we had was the amount of people that descended on the donkeys. Neither of us were thinking that there would be a mob of people, so watching and making sure people didn’t get hands to close to mouths was the biggest thing. The donkeys were well behaved and mostly just ate the grass. A few kids were lucky enough to walk the donkey around a bit and brush it once the mob died down.
“My fingers are crossed that someday we can bring Rojo the Llama in to the shop; I know Green Bean Books [of Portland] has had them and they are adorable!!”
