English girl Ursula Todd dies numerous times in this novel, beginning with the moment of her birth on a snowy day in 1910. But not to worry. The reader soon learns that each time this happens Ursula is revived in the next chapter, having survived a close brush with mortality. After each of resurrection her life continues along one of several possible trajectories. This might sound morbid, or weird, or both, but in the hands of the masterful Kate Atkinson it becomes a warm, involving story about a large middle-class English family in the first half of the twentieth century. As a novel, it’s full of serendipity, literary references, and numerous existential possibilities that collectively serve as a testament to the power and delights of creative fiction. – Arlene from Watermark Books
