The Girl Who Fell From the Sky was a favorite this year of many independent booksellers, including some members on the committee for the Pacific Northwest Book Awards. The committee’s booksellers were disappointed to learn that author Heidi Durrow had moved from Portland to Los Angeles and New York (Hint to Heidi: Next time use Mom’s address!). The book made Booklist’s Top Ten Debut Novels of 2010, and Durrow is on Ebony Magazine’s Power 100 list for the year. Ebony’s write-up says: “Biracial smarty-pants Durrow hit it big this year with her incandescent debut . . . a coming of age story about the daughter of a Danish mother and a Black GI who becomes the sole survivor of a family tragedy.” The Miami Herald published this profile and said The Girl Who Fell From the Sky is “poised to take its place among classics of the American experience.” We could go on and on quoting the praise here, but what we really want to say is: Heidi, come back!
