This impressive historical novel takes place during the early days of the American Civil War. The heroine of the story, Mary Sutter, is a determined and extremely competent mid-wife yearning to become a surgeon. Mary is so headstrong and unwavering in the pursuit of reaching her goal that she often appears belligerent to anyone questioning her aspiration. Running away from a recent heartbreak, Mary heads straight into the tragic circumstance of caring for wounded soldiers in the most appalling environment. Oliveira’s excellent descriptions of the battles and the deplorable conditions of the injured stir deep emotions of the reader. While helping the injured, Mary learns valuable skills needed to become a surgeon. She also realizes that as a woman she has much to share as her heart begins to mend. I found this book inspiring and deeply moving as Mary strove to reach her goal.
