On Wednesdays, the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Bestseller List is published. Every week, we love to see what books have been most popular in independent bookstores around our region. As we peruse the list, we look for something special to showcase. Then we present this weekly feature: Thursday Themes.
Adaptations are bringing a lot of people to their local stores to get the source material. Do you read first, then watch? Or watch, then read? Or read the source material and coverage of the shows or movies but not actually watch?
Project Hail Mary Andy Weir (#2 Paperback fiction) The bestseller list features the original paperback cover, but when that sells out, or if you could just use a little Ryan Gosling boost, there’s also the movie cover.
Heated Rivalry Rachel Reid (#4 Paperback fiction) This is Book 2 in the series, but the TV show is named after it. The bestseller list also features other books in the series: Book 6 in the series, The Long Game, #7 on the list and Book 1 in the series, Game Changer, at #8.
Hamnet Maggie O’Farrell (#6 Paperback fiction)
Wuthering Heights (Movie Tie-In) Emily Brontë (#11 Paperback fiction). A beautiful hardcover illustrated edition also shows up in the YA category this week as #3.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower (Special Edition) Stephen Chbosky (#1 Young Adult) This film came out in 2012, but a friend just rewatched it last week. Maybe it’s on the minds of other folks, too?
Finally, this novel has been on the bestseller list long before the buzz for its upcoming movie began, so we credit readers’ word of mouth more than Hollywood:
Remarkably Bright Creatures Shelby Van Pelt (#5 Paperback fiction)
