Mark Z. Danielewski returns with Tom’s Crossing, a “magisterial, page-turning epic” about a pair of young people who attempt to lead a couple of horses along an icy mountain route in Utah. It sounds like a coming-of-age novel. Or possibly a young Americana novel. Think All the Pretty Horses meets Huckleberry Finn. Or Lonesome Dove meets True Grit. But, at the heart of its sprawling 1232 pages is Danielewski pulling a David Foster Wallace. More like Infinite Jest meets Blood Meridian. Pace yourselves.
Oh, and for those asking, it’s no House of Leaves, part 2. Except for the couple of pages where Danielewski meanders with minimalism, Tom’s Crossing starts at the beginning and goes straight through to the end. You are merely along for the ride.
