Western Oregon is beautiful. The Cascade mountains harbor glorious natural settings, a few people who are off or nearly off the grid, and they provide a lovely backdrop to this story of a divorced father, his 12-year-old daughter and the weekends they spent in one long, yet short, year together. The rest of the time, she is not with him, of course, and life becomes work in Salem to which he must travel each weekday. I don’t know what is more lovely in these pages – the well-described setting, with it tiny natural wonders and bits of shared discovery, or the story of a father and a daughter, trying to squeeze as much joy and love out of time as they can. This story is at once uplifting and heart-breaking. I share it with you gratefully – because I can – and willingly – because I want to.
