The Wild Beneath is an epic love story as well as a love letter to the ocean: its danger, mystery, and beauty. In the aftermath of a Pacific Northwest tsunami, Annie—who has lived on a sailboat nearly her whole life—is reeling on the shore, where she’s stayed behind with her best friend, Evan. Her parents and home are lost to the storm, the community is in shambles, and then a mysterious man washes up on the beach. I felt myself swept away by the depth and breadth of this story, told in alternating timelines, that feels at once modern and ancient, magical and real. Not your typical beach read, but it’s well suited for it. Pick this one up if you enjoy folklore and nature and like your stories character-driven, lyrically written, atmospheric, and immersive.
