The Hairdresser’s Son is an exquisite literary achievement about mystery, discovery, the search for understanding, and the potential for change. Cornelis left the day he learned his wife was pregnant, leaving home only to meet death a day later. Now, his son, Simon, is running the inherited barber shop left to him by the man he never new. Life is quiet until a writer appears in his shop and his very presence sets the stage for change. I loved the idea of this story; the characters; the window on humanity contained on these pages. Translator David Colmer has done a splendid job putting author Gerbrand Bakker’s writing into English so that we, too, may enjoy this gift from the Netherlands. Even the cover is outstanding! My thanks to everyone involved.
