Maybe no one asked for a gayer, funnier, or cozier version of Outlander, but I do not care, dear reader, for George Falls Through Time was exactly what I needed a m4m low drama romantasy to be.
Calling it a romantasy may be a stretch as that genre encompasses a certain YA fairytale mystique, however, in GFTT, the romance between George, a Londoner (dumped by his job and partner) dog walker who quite literally falls through time, and his medieval protector Simon, an indentured servant he feels an inexplicable connection to, makes this bookseller question if Romantasy is maturing along with its readers.
Or perhaps it’s too soon to put GFTT in any category except something I thoroughly enjoyed and feel nostalgic for when I hit a reading slump.
Maybe I can’t stop thinking about George’s tumble because the novel kept revealing more and more unexpected depth that brought a new kind of brilliance to what can be a well trodden fantasy trope (I came to learn later that the novel is a twist on St. George and the Dragon!) Whatever the case, I am grateful to be gifted a genre bending novel that’s surprisingly humorous and poignantly reflective on identity and desire through a refreshing medieval and contemporary lens, one that feels akin to some kind of newfound philosophy born out of the last gasps of capitalism and the search for a primordial pure love.
p.s. The audiobook is quite delightful.

Nothing in this novel is what it seems at first. Not even, or especially, George. Without giving too much away )for there is much here to discover– surprising and wonderful and horrific!) this book involves time travel. But not in your average time travel way. Our hero, George, turns out to be not exactly who he– or we– imagined him to be. At turns hilarious and heartfelt, this will keep you thinking about it long after you’ve closed the book.
