Damned to repeatedly outlive all man and creature she’s ever loved, and having fallen out with certain family, Vera comes back home to root out the source of the fountain of youth and undo its curse on her. Her search is complicated by a secretive corporation buying up every parcel in the vicinity and then by the return of her long-lost brother. The novel’s initial allure is its mystery. The lush descriptions of the Catskill Mountains conjure their preserved natural beauty and invoke a mythical twist on the tale, transporting the reader through Vera’s multiple existences with ever-fleeting happiness. The characters Vera befriends in her modern life are quite memorable and their digs, quite Instagramable. There’s no way to read this book and not be tempted to stay awhile—at least for one lifetime.
