From the writer of some of the best recent TV shows (“The Good Place,” “Parks & Rec”), comes Loved One, a debut novel just as smart, perceptive, funny, tender, and quixotic as Aisha Muharrar’s scripts. In another writer’s hands, the story of two former girlfriends of a dead rock star trying to get along could easily veer into stereotypes and cliches. But none of these characters is typical, and their interactions are very well rendered and full of perfectly observed small surprises. Well, mostly small. Muharrar is also excellent at plotting a compelling story with unexpected twists and turns. By the end of Loved One, you’ll feel as if you know Julia, Elizabeth, and Gabe and will be sorry to let them go.
