A great book for kiddos who don’t speak their family’s native language or are not fluent in their family’s language. Second culture kids will relate to this book about meeting extended family when visiting their parent’s home country. As a Filipino-American kid visiting the Philippines, I couldn’t speak Tagalog or my family’s local language Pangasinan but figured out other ways to communicate with family members. The English that my cousins spoke (and learned in school) was very formal and proper compared to the American English and slang that I spoke. We still had to figure out what we were saying to each other! As a high schooler I had to explain why I could understand Spanish but not Tagalog or Pangasinan.
