This beautiful little gem of a novel follows the unnamed narrator as she goes from one temporary assignment to the next, taking on roles such as Chairman of the Board, pirate, and murderer’s assistant. Leichter’s writing style is playful and clever, and the world she creates in this novel feels all at once fantastical and real. At times hilarious and sneakily heartbreaking, surprising me like a punch to the gut, this book had me thinking about my purpose in life and the absurdity of the social conventions we sometimes force ourselves to live by in order to find acceptance. Anyone who’s worked a temporary job, anyone who’s found themselves searching for purpose and permanence in life, can relate to the narrator’s struggle to fill someone else’s shoes and somehow still find a place of her own in the world.
