A new film adaptation of classic science fiction novel Dune has opened in U.S. theaters, bringing audiences back to the desert planet Arrakis, home of sand worms, spice, politics and war.
While set on an alien world, Dune was inspired by a very real place: the Oregon Dunes that lie along the central and southern coast. On this week’s episode of Peak Northwest, we talk about where and how to explore the sweeping dunes. . .
While Dune author Frank Herbert, who was originally from the Tacoma area, first found inspiration in the Oregon Dunes, his novels quickly outgrew the coastal landscape as he crafted a strange, new world entirely. But those who visit the dunes today might still catch a glimpse of his inspiration, a taste of Arrakis in our own shifting sands. . .
