Remember Eugene author J. C. Geiger‘s road trip from Oregon to NYC for Book Expo in 2017? Over 100 booklovers supported his journey (and the American Library Association) so he could meet his fundraising goal.

For Geiger’s new book, The Great Big One, readers can travel along, both virtually through a mixtape with clues and in real life to independent bookstores around the country that will have “treasure.” Geiger secured the rights to the music for the novel’s soundtrack, from artists like Rhiannon Giddens, The Hold Steady, Pink Martini, Fruit Bats and more. After readers order the book with an independent bookstore, they can email the author to get a very limited edition cassette tape!
“Get the book. Support the indies. And let’s chase the music.”
This has to be one of the most creative (and lovingly-done) order campaigns. It’s a musical potpourri, it’s a scavenger hunt, and it’s also a throwback to retro technology. Quick: Find a neighbor with an old car with a tape deck so you can experience it all! I know my dad still has my old boom box in the basement somewhere…
