Torrey, a Black San Francisco State University student in his first year, is looking for a new start and is happy to be away from his home in LA. He misses terribly his late uncle with whom he operated an apiary, or bee farm. Torrey saw his uncle as one of the few positive forces in his life, but has quickly found new friends and an old boyfriend at SF State. When developers want to buy the apiary out from under him, he is torn about whether to stay in school or return to LA to fight gentrification and keep his farm. A delightfully readable book about growing up and out, and learning that there are no pat answers when it comes to making choices for one’s own good and that of family and society.
