How the world has changed since January, when the 2020 Pacific Northwest Book Award winners were announced and authors, bookstores, and publishers were making happy plans for celebratory events. Green Bean Books jumped at the chance to host the award presentation event for Dylan Meconis and Queen of the Sea. The original idea was to have a big party at Green Bean on Sunday May 17th at 2:00 pm. Everyone thought that would be ideal because it could celebrate the award, promote the paperback (which came out Tuesday May 12th) and give the author time to welcome a new baby who was born not long after the PNBA Award winners were announced.
Plans have changed! Green Bean books will host a celebration for Dylan Meconis and Queen of the Sea— just online instead of in-store. You can watch Dylan’s speech for Queen of the Sea on Wednesday, May 20th at 4pm. It will be a free facebook event. So wherever you live, you can be a part of the party! (Just FYI– since you’ll be partying in your home, it’s BYOC: bring your own cake.)
In the meantime, here’s Dylan with a heartfelt placeholder thank you, and if you have not yet treated yourself to Queen of the Sea, you can buy a copy from Green Bean Books. The Portland store is offering curbside service and neighborhood delivery (order with their staff through phone, email, or their web contact form) and can ship books anywhere in the country (order through their shop-and-ship site).
Parents, you can take a motivational tip from working parent PNBA Executive Director Brian Jueneman. He wrote to share about his “9-year-old, who’s currently doing ‘school’ in the office seating area outside my door, reading the book. I gave it to her a few days ago for her reading at work book and she’s been hustling to get her schoolwork done so she can get to it!” He caught an outdoor shot of his engrossed young reader with the award plaque in the background, before it was sent out for the celebrations.
