Wednesday, March 25th at 6pm – Virtual book discussion with Betsy Gaines Quammen and David Quammen on pandemics and misinformation
Join us on Facebook Live for a discussion with conservationist and historian Betsy Gaines Quammen and her husband, science journalist David Quammen. The duo will discuss Betsy’s new book American Zion: Cliven Bundy, God and Public Lands in the West and what it reveals about misinformation and distrust of science. David will add his expertise on disease outbreaks that jump from animal hosts to humans, such as COVID-19.
Don’t miss this virtual event. Here’s Betsy Gaines Quammen’s personal invitation to all of you:
“On March 25 at 6pm MST, David and I will be live-streaming a discussion on outbreaks and the dangers of misinformation. March 25 was going to be the day of my book launch for American Zion: Cliven Bundy, God and Public Lands in the West, but the book tour has been postponed. Instead, David and I thought it would be fun—but also perhaps useful at this hard, crazy time— to talk about our books and how they intersect at this very moment. David, who wrote Spillover: Animal Infections and the Next Pandemic, will cover the topic of disease outbreak and I will talk about misinformation and how people in militia circles, such as Nevada’s Bundy family, are dangerously approaching the outbreak on social media. What does it mean and what does it cost, in the midst of a pandemic, when sectors of our population believe science is a hoax or COVID-19 is a plot cooked up by Democrats?
“I hope you can join us. It will be casual, hopefully fun, informative and best of all, not contagious. If you’d like to read either or both books before the talk, the Country Bookshelf is offering curb service or delivery. Help us support local business!”
We can’t wait to chat with Betsy and David. Thank you for all your support at this uncertain time.

Local bookstores are still building community, even in this time of enforced social distancing when we have to connect virtually. What is your local bookstore doing? Do you have suggestions for what would be helpful to you?
