Truly, one of the best books I’ve read all year! The writing is beautiful and tender in this coming of age, love story, and mystery novel. This is the first novel by New York Times best-selling non-fiction writer and wildlife scientist Delia Owens (John Burroughs Medal for Nature Writing), and the way she describes the natural world in the North Carolina coastal marsh setting is gorgeous. If you love nature, hard-scrabble loveable characters (Kya, “Marsh Girl” — the 6-year-old who is abandoned by her family in a series of departures and left to live alone in the marsh), poetry, birds — lots of birds — and mysteries, you’ll love this novel. It was going to be a nice long end-of-summer read for me, but I couldn’t stop reading and instead spent a wonderful weekend reading!
