Seattle7Writers, the nonprofit collective of Pacific Northwest authors, partners with independent bookstores this summer to introduce readers to favorite authors and raise money for literacy nonprofits.
In July, Island Books hosted the Seattle7Writers cookout to benefit Team Read, a nonprofit organization that pairs struggling young readers with trained teen reading coaches for one-on-one tutoring after school and during the summer. They raised over $600.
We mingled with some of our favorite local authors including Jim Lynch, Bridget Foley, Dori Butler, Robert Dugoni, J. Anderson Coates, and Clare Meeker and ate hot dogs grilled by Garth Stein himself. Garth also contributed an entertaining Q&A to our blog beforehand.

Doesn’t that sound like fun? Well, if you’re in the Seattle area on Thursday, August 16 from 5:00- 7:00, you can join another group of Seattle7Writers at Queen Anne Book Company for a BBQ on the back patio. The store will donate 20% of the sales during the cookout to Literacy Source. Authors attending include Jessixa Bagley, Neal Bascomb, Daniel James Brown, Laurie Frankel, Lyanda Lynn Haupt, Naveed Jamali, Claudia Rowe, Michael Schmeltzer, Jennie Shortridge, Garth Stein, Ingrid Thoft, and Bill Thorness.
Enjoy snacks, books, and summer fun! Authors will be on hand to grill, sling drinks, and offer snacks, book recs, and stimulating conversation (as well as autographs in books you buy). Stop in for hot dogs (meat and veg), authors, summer reads, and to support a great cause. A bonus: it’s farmer’s market night in Queen Anne, so you can shop for fresh produce just a few blocks away before or after you find the books you can’t wait to devour. (Queen Anne Book Company is located at 1811 Queen Anne Ave. N. in Seattle.)
