One of my favorite books from last year was the Booker-longlisted Reservoir 13. Although it didn’t win, it was such a phenomenon in Britain that the BBC commissioned McGregor to write a series of companion stories that were read by different actors on Radio 4. Now in book form in the States, The Reservoir Tapes introduces new characters and revisits old ones, sometimes complicating, and at other times clarifying, his earlier book. But they all are written with the same how-did-he-do-that storytelling magic that makes the mundane—a trip to get a pet dog or the reason behind an elaborate home-cooked meal—just as compelling as the mystery of a missing girl. The Tapes are a bit like the outtakes from the director’s cut of Reservoir 13, and any true fan won’t want to miss them.
