Major Thomas Greer, pen name Dalton Fury, wrote Kill Bin Laden, which documented his time in 2001 as the leader of a large platoon of Delta Force and British Special Boat Service on a raid to the Tora Bora region of Afghanistan in search of Osama Bin Laden. Under the Dalton Fury pseudonym he then wrote several novels featuring Kolt “Racer” Raynor before Greer/Fury’s untimely and early death from cancer in October, 2016. Delta Force is the U.S. Army’s counterpart to the Navy SEAL Team 6. I devour these types of military action thrillers.
Greer/Fury is right at the top of the list of writers of this genre. In Black Site, we are introduced to Kolt Raynor, a disgraced member of Delta Force, who is now reduced to drinking heavily and uncontrollably. He works occasionally for a for hire private security firm until he screws that up. He also works part time in a hardware store not far from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, home to Delta Force.
His former civilian boss Col. Pete Grauer, whom he also knew in Delta, calls him into a special operation featuring an off the record operation back in the Afghanistan/Pakistan theater. This leads to a follow-up operation regarding a CIA sponsored “black site” in the region. Also involved in the story are the remnants of Kolt’s squad from his last, botched mission in Delta three years earlier. Kolt thought they were all dead.
The book contains some of the most vivid and graphic descriptions of military and paramilitary operations I have ever read. You can tell that the author was a pro. Like many other books of this genre, there is perhaps a little bit of truth behind the action. If you are curious about how these operations take place and the men and women who run them, this book is for you. Even if you are not curious, read this book any way. I cannot wait to dive into into the rest of the series.
