We love books and independent bookstores, and we particularly love when they send us updates about how they’re connecting with their communities.
Here’s an email we got from Carol Spurling, owner of BookPeople of Moscow:
Hello, all, last night we were honored to receive from the Mayor of Moscow one of six 2016 Orchid Awards from the Moscow Historic Preservation Commission for the work we did on the front of our building a year ago, repairing and preserving the tile “roofette” and removing the old sign that obscured the arched entrance. Both the arch and the tile roofette are integral to the Mission style of our 1926 building which is a listed contributing property in our downtown Moscow national historic district.

The photo is of me with the certificate, and I’ve also included a couple sketches of the front of our building by local artists Kristin Becker (black one) and Matthew Brehm (brown one).
Also, earlier this week Sy Montgomery, author of The Soul of an Octopus, visited the University of Idaho to give the keynote address for their Common Read program. I am on the UI Common Read committee and nominated the book. I was so happy that Sy visited the store the next day so we could meet. She is an enthusiastic supporter of local independent bookstores.
Is it possible that I was wearing the same sweater on both days? Indeed it is!! Owners of independent bookstores don’t have time to think about clothes!
It’s a fine looking sweater, indeed!
