Salt to the Sea is all that I hoped for and more from Ruta Sepetys (the author of Between Shades of Gray). Once again, she shines a light on a dark part of history with a beautifully crafted novel. Because of the alternating points of view and short, poignant chapters, I was torn between wanting to read at a breakneck pace– I couldn’t wait to know all the secrets being hidden– and wanting to slow down to savor every character’s sense of hope in the face of such desperation. This is a novel that readers of all ages who enjoy historical fiction will appreciate.
Although this is published as a teen novel (so it’s hardcover for just $18.99), I recommend it to adults, too, especially those who liked All the Light We Cannot See!
