Troost hails from the Netherlands and authored three entertaining travelogues prior to this book. In his latest book, Troost stays true to his traveling ways, covering the sights and customs with considerable humor. However this book offers more, and benefits a great deal from these additions.
In Headhunters Troost follows in the sailing footsteps of Robert Louis Stevenson. He offers up considerable information about Stevenson– why he became a south sea traveler, what he met along the way, and some of what made the man tick. Following Stevenson forms the backdrop to why Troost goes where he does. It is not really the why behind his travels, however. Troost suffered from alcoholism for many years and reached a point of no return or redemption. He chose the latter and spent a year in rehab before setting off on this adventure. In addition to the travelogue narrative, Troost shares a great deal about alcoholism, addiction, the brain, and his own personal story of recovery. All together this book really works. I felt it was his best work yet. Take a trip to the south seas…
