Skyping In for Book Club Author Visits
May 22, 2013
Oregon coast writer Art Spinella, author of the Drago Mystery Series, is increasing his reach and his book sales around the country with a simple technology: Skype.
“Book reading clubs are a great source of paperback sales for both the book store and the author,” Spinella says. “I love book signings, but sometimes it’s just too far to be practical. With Skype, the author can be wherever the book store is.”
Most recently, Spinella Skyped the Mechanicsburg Mystery Bookshop in Pennsylvania, answering questions and giving a light-hearted presentation on his series. And he did it all from his desk in Oregon.

Store owner Deb Beamer says, “What a great time everyone had Wednesday night. Jay [also of Mechanicsburg Mystery Bookshop] is so jealous that he missed the great time.”
Set up is easy on both sides. Deb hooked up her laptop to a projector; Art used a Logictech camera attached to his home computer (although the built-in camera on laptops usually works well, too). There were many questions about the first in the Drago Mystery Series. And of course the club members all purchased Drago #1 as their book of the month. Deb expects the Skype meeting will enhance purchases of others in the series.
Drago Mysteries are available as Kobo ebooks through your local independent bookstore's ecommerce website.

That’s terrific. But what I want to know is how I get into that gig. I am both willing and able to Skype with book clubs but finding the book clubs to skype with is the problem, not the technology. So, if anyone might be reading this, consider this an open invitation. If you would like to pick any of my books for your club – and a number of them have been, and I’ve visited with clubs before with a very enthusiastic response – please drop me a line! 🙂
