“Guess it is the retired teacher in me, but I am always drawn toward
books set in a classroom. The author, Buyea is a teacher who taught
third and fourth graders, which is very evident in the reality of the
characters and events in the book. Beginning in September, set in a fifth
grade classroom seven very distinct students narrate this delightful
story. Mr. Terupt is an amazing first year teacher demonstrating
an ability to connect with his diverse students. The year progresses with each chapter set in a month of the school year and the seven students share their thoughts about school, their teacher, one another and their own capabilities. Through the year the class begins to gain confidence and trust in one another to function as a learning community until one snowy day when a tragedy strikes at the very heart of each of them. The students learn they must rely on the skills they have learned from Mr. Terupt to regain the balance they had been experiencing as a class. I have passed this book on to several young readers in grades 3-6. Several have told me it was great because the characters are real. As one of the best young reader books I have read in several years, I highly recommend you share it with a young reader in your life.” —Cynthia, Paulina Springs Books, Sisters, OR.
