Broadway Books is having a party this Sunday, May 6 to celebrate its 20th birthday. Co-owners Sally McPherson and Roberta Dyer have a lively celebration planned, for the day and for the next year, to thank their customers for “helping us to ride the waves that have carried us up and down over the years.”
Sunday, there will be cake and champagne and free 20th anniversary book bags for the first ten customers who spend $50 or more. The store will also host a photo booth from noon to 4 pm. “Yes, you heard us right,” the bookbroads say on their blog. “A photobooth so you can have your photo taken holding one of your favorite books—and you can take the photo strip with you!”
Another great idea, the store will gather email addresses from customers to help bolster its mailing list and will put those into a hat and draw one to win a Nook Simple Touch eReader. They’re also offering double value for full frequent buyer ‘pink cards’ Sunday.
From June 2012 through May 2013, the store will give away five $20 Broadway Books Gift Certificates each month, drawn from completed ‘pink cards.’ During those same months, they’ll highlight one book each month that will be available for 20 percent off.
Mink River author and store friend Brian Doyle wrote a salute to the store that Letterary Press has turned into a broadside. Those will be available to customers upon request until supplies run out. We haven’t seen the broadside yet, but we bet it has some of the same flavor as the tribute Doyle wrote to Broadway in his December Christmas list here, where he said it is: “(a) run by a brilliant funny honest salty gentle soul named Roberta Dyer, (b) was saved from bankruptcy by burritos, I kid you not, and that’s a sentence you have not read in a while, eh, and (c) is a kick to read in because it’s small and long and you can shout happily in public without being, for once, talked to politely by police officers.”
Join us in giving the Bookbroads a loud and happy shout: Happy Birthday, guys!
