“The author’s metaphor ‘we all have baggage so we might as well get used to traveling with it’ sets the tone for this book. The narrator (sure sounds like it might be Pam Houston herself) travels the world ‘searching for authenticity, perhaps fleeing from conflict and drinking up life experiences.’ The book form is a bit unusual in that I would say there is not a plot, per se, but each chapter (some very brief) describes an experience or a person who has had an impact on the narrator, one way or another. One of my favorite lines in the book comes from a flight attendant. The plane had been experiencing a fuel system failure and after successfully landing she says ‘if your contents haven’t shifted you must be carrying lead weights.’ Another metaphor that can be applied to so many of life experiences!”—Cindy, Queen Anne Books, Seattle.
