Nothing to do with hoops skills—this is the original WNBA, the Women’s National Book Association, and they have awarded Seattle’s Queen Anne Books a 2011 Pannell Award, recognizing “booksellers who stimulate, promote and encourage children’s and young people’s interest in books.” Queen Anne is the single nationwide recipient in the general bookstore category, praised by the committee for myriad reasons, including “the fact that they reach out to children in foster homes and give discounts for parent-child book groups.” For the honor, the store will receive a check for $1,000 and a framed piece of original art by a children’s book illustrator. The award will be officially presented at the opening of the Children’s Book and Author Breakfast at Book Expo America on May 24th in New York City.
