One of the Northwest booksellers’ favorite authors, Pete Fromm, is finally seeing a feature film made from one of his novels, As Cool As I Am, which was published in 2004. Fromm, who has won four Awards from the Northwest Booksellers, will soon be on his way to France for a tour promoting the paperback release there of Dry Rain, a collection of short stories, which also won a Booksellers Award in 1998. Filming for As Cool As I Am just began this week in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The novel tells the story of a sarcastic teenage Lucy, living in small town in Montana, with mostly absent parents, dealing with the pain of adolescence and her boyfriend Kenny. We received an email from Pete, telling us about his newest adventures:
“They actually, no lie, started filming As Cool As I Am. Can hardly believe it myself. Sarah Bolger as Lucy, Claire Danes as the mom, James Marsden
the dad, Thomas Mann as Kenny. I saw audition tapes of Bolger and Mann and Danes and they hit it out of the park. Filming in New Mexico, and I’m going to try to get the boys [Fromm’s sons] down as extras in a high school scene if they film those before I leave for the book tour for the French edition of Dry Rain… To make it even more ridiculous, the Italians just bought the rights to Indian Creek Chronicles. Ciao, Baby.
You guys at PNBA were the first to notice any of these books, as I’m sure you’re aware. 1994, 1998, 2004. So I’m holding you all responsible for this overnight success. Just so you know… Thanks, Pete.”
It sure makes me feel old when Claire Danes is playing the mom! Of course, I still see her as Angela in My So Called Life, even though it has been 17 years (!!) since that show debuted.
