Change happens. Two store moves, a shift from children’s only to a general interest shop, not to mention a lot of industry up and downs, show that Seattle’s Secret Garden Bookshop can roll with the changes with the best of them. The Ballard neighborhood bookstore is featured in a Shelf Awareness interview with owner, Christy McDanold, who recognizes that a healthy existence for an indie store means she has to look beyond the stock on her bookshelves. “At this point I would say that events of all kinds, whether they’re author appearances, conferences or our relationship with the local library, are crucial to the store’s survival.”
