How books come to be written is often very fascinating. The story behind Brownie Groundhog and the February Fox by Portland author Susan Blackaby is one of those. Ms. Blackaby dedicated her book to childhood friend, Greg Florant, with the words “To Greg, obviously.” Of course, it may not have been obvious at all to the reader. Turns out, Florant is now a biology professor at Colorado State University, studying marmots (you can call them “groundhogs”) and ground squirrels and how they use fats and nutrients to hibernate. Good stuff, with actual real-world applications. Today@Colorado State published a heartwarming piece today about the author and her lifelong friendship with the professor.
