One Nightstand

Mink River by Brian Doyle

Brian Doyle’s Mink River swept me along like its namesake, out to a sea of believing where a crow talks, and the Departments of Public Works truly works for the public good—all species of public. An adult fable, as richly diverse as old growth forests, it’s the story of a particular summer in a town whose residents are all connected through the bonds of love and place. Uniquely Northwestern, I want to thrust it into the hands of those who have newly arrived, or have been here for awhile without appreciating all that lies west of the I 5 corridor, much like Sometimes a Great Notion was given to me thirty-odd years ago.
