Six Eugene artists and writers will read from Ken Kesey’s letters and original manuscripts December 2 as a fundraiser to help the University of Oregon’s library acquire the Kesey collection, which includes typewritten manuscripts, artwork, collages, photographs and correspondence, dating from 1960 – 2001. The UO has an opportunity to purchase the collection from the Kesey family and keep it in its current home, the UO Knight Library, as Kesey wished. Cecelia Hagen, Miriam Gershow, Paul Calandrino, Cai Emmons, Lauren Kessler and Max Rayneard will read from the original documents while local saxophonist Charlie Gurke improvises accompaniment at the OPUS VII art gallery from 5:30-7 pm. “It is impossible to be a writer here and not feel enormously grateful to Kesey,” says Emmons, one of the event’s organizers. “This special collection of Ken Kesey’s papers offers insight into the life and work of a man who was, and continues to be, a pivotal part of the Eugene community.” The event is free. Donations will be accepted.
