When you make a career of repeatedly planning for new destinations, conditions and adventures, what’s adding a four-month old to the packing list? For those of us who make cheese quesadillas for three straight nights rather than drag the kids to the market, it’s, clearly, too much to consider. But for author and “extreme outdoorsman” (as described by NPR‘s All Things Considered) Steven Rinella: bonus, sidekick!
Here, Rinella’s son, James is boarding at the dock and up in the float plane, leaving the family’s cabin on Prince of Wales Island, Alaska on the little man’s inaugural visit. We suspect these two have already communed on the fact that there will be many, many more trips like this.
Unfortunately, James can’t accompany his father on every leg of his hectic travel schedule just yet. Rinella is regularly on location into early next year filming episodes for his yet-untitled Travel Channel show. We may not know the name, but we do know that it’s a hunting/outdoor/adventure show, premiering January 2, 9pm, as a lead-in to Anthony Bourdain’s “No Reservations.” Nice slot.
After getting hooked on the show, keep an eye out for his next book, which he calls “a hunter’s manifesto,” to be published by Spiegel & Grau next year. We guarantee there will be more to it than how to choose the right thermal wear, and NWBL will have Rinella back to talk about it.
