Novelist Kaleb Nation talks about his crush on Gayle Forman’s ya crossover novel If I Stay (Dutton, 2009) as part of NPR’s You Must Read This series. If I Stay, set in Oregon, is narrated by a 17-year-old cellist who hovers between life and death after a car accident kills her family. “I hadn’t planned on getting serious about If I Stay,” Nation writes. “It was a passing fancy with a gorgeous cover. But every moment I spent reading Forman’s masterpiece drew me in more.” Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke has signed on to direct the screen adaptation of the novel. Forman is University of Oregon grad and a former journalist who lives in Brooklyn.
