With the exquisite detail of the screenwriter that she is, Mitchell describes her characters and settings in this novel with vivid awareness. This first generation family of Ukrainian farmers in Alberta, Canada is brought to life with such excellent historical research that one truly gets a feeling for that time and struggle of the 1930s.
