I had never heard of Rich Chiappone until I saw the cover of his book, Opening Days, advertised on 49 Writers, a wonderful blog subtitled “Collaborative Reflections and Book News By and About Alaskan Authors.” Opening Days was published in June by Barclay Creek Press, a small literary press founded in 2008 to publish “quality outdoor literature,” which is distributed by Stackpole Books. I haven’t read Opening Days yet, but I am going to get a copy and give it a try, especially after reading what Pete Fromm says about the author: “Rich Chiappone is one of the very few writers whose work I always want to read. He’s among the best there is.” Pete Fromm, of course, as author of As Cool As I Am, How All This Started, Dry Rain, and Indian Creek Chronicles, all PNBA Book Award winners, is the second-winningest author in the Northwest independent bookstores’ Award stable, behind only the inimitable Ivan Doig. If Pete says I should read Chiappone, I will read Chiappone! I must admit, though, what caught my eye is the cover, which strikes me as one of the most beautiful that I’ve seen so far this year. Is the Award Committee considering Opening Days for an Award??
