I am not the most pop-culture literate of folks, seeing as we don’t have a television with actual reception in my house. So I was quite confused when I started hearing about a new movie starring Tina Fey called “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.” I had heard rave reviews from colleagues, customers, and Mary at Amy Bloom’s Books about Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, a novel by Portland’s David Shafer, but I was pretty darn sure what I’d read and heard about the book did not mesh with the glimpses I caught of a spunky female American journalist in Afghanistan in the movie trailer. A little online searching has confirmed: The basis for the movie coming out March 4 is a memoir Kim Barker, originally published under the title The Taliban Shuffle. The novel by David Shafer has not yet gotten the Hollywood treatment.
You probably all knew this a long time ago, but I thought I’d share, just in case. Both books look good to me. Why not read both and compare?
