From Country Bookshelf in Bozeman, MT:
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to recognize and uplift the voices and experiences of survivors. As a reader, you undoubtedly know the power of books to help us heal, foster community, and build empathy for those struggling with hardships we ourselves have not experienced. There is a reclamation of power in being able to share one’s own story, in having the opportunity to speak a truth that is often questioned or ignored.
As such, we’ve put together a collection of books that explore the many facets of domestic violence, from the unflinching portrayals of abuse in Dorothy Allison’s novel Bastard Out of Carolina and Carmen Maria Machado’s memoir In the Dream House to Kelly White’s A Safe Place for Women, which discusses strategies, legal options, and supportive organizations to help abuse survivors overcome the many problems that accompany intimate partner violence. This Domestic Violence Awareness Month we hope you’ll consider making a donation to one of Gallatin Valley’s nonprofits that help survivors of domestic abuse, including:
- HAVEN, which provides confidential support, survivor legal services, advocacy, counseling, and a safe place to stay for anyone impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault, sex trafficking, and stalking
- We Are HER, offering services on trauma recovery for survivors who are ready for the next step in their healing journey
- Fierce Women Warriors Society, dedicated to the prevention of violence against Native women and to equipping them with real tools to protect themselves
