The Winners of the Susan Kamil Scholarship for Emerging Writers
Congratulations to the five writer-booksellers who have been selected to receive the $10,000 Susan Kamil Scholarship for Emerging Writers. The Susan Kamil Scholarship was established by Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and bestselling author Charles Duhigg and Liz Alter, a professor of biology at California State University Monterey Bay, in honor of Kamil, who was executive vice president and publisher of Random House when she died in 2019.
The winners are (listed in the order they are pictured, from left):

- Rachel Dillon of Beacon Hill Books & Café in Boston, MA
- Liv Morris of Harvard Book Store in Cambridge, MA
- Joanna Roddy of Roundabout Books in Bend, OR
- Brendan McHugh of Green Apple Books on the Park in San Francisco
“These five writers ― and all the applicants ― show why booksellers are so important: they share new stories, build communities and, ultimately, keep our democracies strong,” said Duhigg. “I know Susan would have loved these books and would have loved supporting writers bringing more beauty and truth into the world.”
