For the last few days, if you had looked for me you would have found me curled up with a blanket and Chris Cleave’s newest work of WWII fiction. From the first page, I was captivated by the endearing naivete of the heroine and the originality of the two men who eventually vie for her affections. Cleave’s expert use of witty, engaging dialogue propels the story forward, while his detailed and exquisite prose forces you to stop, almost breathless, to let the force of his words sink in. Though there are many stories set during WWII, few writers capture the human condition as clearly as Chris Cleave. Take care, for once you begin, time may slip away from you entirely unnoticed.
