I am obsessed with this book! Yes, on the surface it’s about the man who invented the Diesel engine. But it is so much more than that. This is the story of human invention colliding with humanity’s ability to destroy. Set during the eve of WWI, Diesel’s invention has the possibility to change the world — either for better or worse. Before the question can be decided, Diesel disappears under mysterious circumstances. With a list of people who want him dead that includes Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany and Rockefeller, answers– let alone justice– will be hard to find.

Diesel truly believed his invention could make the world a better place. Instead it had a great impact on politics leading up to WWI. This well-written biography provides a fascinating overview of his impact on political developments leading up to the Great War, and also how his invention impacted the businesses of John D. Rockefeller, Adolphus Busch, Alfred Nobel, and many others. A riveting story.
